After a week focused on the state’s financial woes and a week focused on the new White House administration, lawmakers will turn up the pace this week. Committee hearings are stacked with bills on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, as the General Assembly works its way through the roughly 1,400 bills filed so far.
Lawmakers have until next week to hit filing deadline for bills in their respective houses. If they do, those bills are usually guaranteed a committee hearing — though many don’t make it any further.
The funding freeze by the Republican administration could affect trillions of dollars and cause widespread disruption in healthcare research, education programs, and other initiatives. Even grants that have been awarded but not spent are supposed to be halted.
