The Maryland General Assembly passed a bill Wednesday that would raise the minimum age to buy tobacco and tobacco-related products from 18 to 21. It is now on Gov. Larry Hogan’s desk for his signature.

Maryland would be the 10th state to raise the purchase age to 21.

The bill raises the minimum age to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products from 18 to 21, and it changes the definition of tobacco products to include electronic smoking devices, like vape pens.

Additionally, it gives the state Department of Health authority to perform unannounced retail inspections and implements tobacco education programs with hopes of cutting teen smoking.
