Baltimore County Police have shared the names of two officers who fatally shot a shoplifting suspect inside a Randallstown ALDI supermarket Tuesday.

They said Emanuel David Joshua Oates, 24, who was homeless, was swinging a machete at them and refused to cooperate.

Officer First Class Sands and Officer First Class Waugh were behind the shooting. They’ve both been with the department for less than 5 years.

Neither officer has been involved in any previous shooting incidents, according to Baltimore County Police.

They have been placed on routine administrative leave until the investigation is over.

Baltimore County police said a machete-wielding shoplifting suspect has died after being shot by two officers inside a Randallstown ALDI Tuesday.

The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Emanuel David Oates according to Fox Baltimore.

Police said the names of the officers will be forthcoming. Oates was allegedly swinging a machete and threatened officers during the confrontation.

According to officials, Baltimore County police officers responded to a shoplifting call from a Dollar Tree in the area.

Officers chased the suspect from the shoplifting call into the Aldi Food market at the Liberty Court Shopping Center in the 8600 block of Liberty Road in Randallstown on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they received a call for a shoplifting incident at the Dollar Tree just before 4:30 p.m. The suspect was seen walking across the parking lot by approaching officers.

Officers saw the man pull out at least one weapon and run through the parking lot, police said.
