“The life of a community member was lost on Sunday and that is never a situation to be taken lightly,” says Nicole Chang, NAACP Criminal Justice and Public Safety Chair. “This incident is an opportunity for us to have an open and honest conversation in our community, with BPD and with City leadership about how we can provide the best possible support for loved ones and community members that may be experiencing a mental health crisis and make a real investment in how publicly funded agencies can intervene in the most effective way.”
“We offer our condolences to the family and loved ones of Tyree Moorehead and all of the individuals impacted by this tragic incident. Our legal redress committee will be actively investigating this matter,” explained NaShona Kess, Esq., Vice President and Legal Redress Chair. “We have met with representatives from the Baltimore Police Department, and believe that police intervention was necessary, however, we present the following questions:
1. Fourteen shots were discharged from the officer’s weapon. Is that use of force justified or is this a case of excessive force? 2. What are the resources or programs that are in place or need to be put in place when there are patterns of mental health crisis in order to circumvent incidences that may cause harm to self or others? 3. What are the changes to training or policy that BPD will need to implement as a result of this incident?”
