A van pulled from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor last week may have been underwater for more than a decade, according to Baltimore police. The vehicle, discovered during a police dive team training on July 24, contained a body and was confirmed Monday to have been reported missing in 2014.

The mud-covered Honda minivan bore markings for the Silver Taxi Cab Service of Waldorf and was found submerged near Pier IV, behind the National Aquarium’s annex building. Its windows were shattered, and the vehicle showed signs of long-term water exposure.

Baltimore Police say the van was reported missing from Waldorf in December 2014. Investigators believe it may have been underwater for several years based on its condition and that of the unidentified remains inside.

Authorities have not yet determined the identity of the person found in the vehicle or the circumstances surrounding their death.

“People deserve the right to feel safe,” said local resident Michael Berger. “I hope the community can help uncover who this person was so their family can finally have some closure.”

This case adds to a troubling pattern of suspicious deaths in Maryland this year. In April, a woman was found dead inside a locked safe in her Baltimore home, raising concerns about domestic violence. The following month, a local business owner was discovered inside a burned-out truck. Two teenagers were later arrested and charged with murder and arson in connection with that case.

As police continue their investigation, they’re urging anyone with information about the van or the person found inside to come forward.
