Baltimore Sues DraftKings, FanDuel Over Alleged Predatory Gambling Practices

Baltimore City has filed a lawsuit against online sports betting giants DraftKings and FanDuel, accusing them of engaging in deceptive marketing tactics that encourage compulsive gambling. The lawsuit claims these companies, owned by Flutter Entertainment, use misleading promotions to lure new users while leveraging analytics to exploit individuals struggling with gambling addiction.
According to the city, DraftKings and FanDuel violate Baltimore’s Consumer Protection Ordinance (CPO) by employing “unfair and deceptive practices” that target vulnerable gamblers.
“These companies are using shady tactics, and our residents are paying the price,” said Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott. “They deliberately target those most at risk, including individuals with gambling disorders, and the consequences have been devastating. This lawsuit is a necessary step to hold them accountable and protect our community.”
Baltimore officials argue that the betting platforms foster addiction through aggressive marketing, then exploit users who become dependent on their services.
“Their predatory practices have caused real harm in our city,” said Baltimore City Solicitor Ebony Thompson. “We are taking action to ensure they answer for the damage they’ve done.”
The city’s lawsuit marks a significant move in the ongoing debate over the ethics of online gambling and its impact on vulnerable populations.
