Coppin State Women’s Basketball Makes History with WNIT Bid
Coppin State Women’s Basketball Makes History with First WNIT Bid Since 2009

It’s been a breakout season for the Coppin State women’s basketball team, and calling it anything less than a huge success would be an understatement.
For the first time since 2009, the Eagles are heading to the WNIT postseason tournament, capping off a stellar year with 18 wins—their best record since the 2011-2012 season.
“I couldn’t be more excited for this group,” said head coach Jermaine Woods, who, like many of his players, is experiencing postseason play for the first time.
The Eagles aren’t just making headlines—they’re making history. “[We’re] just making a stamp for HBCUs,” Woods said. “We got an at-large bid for the WNIT, which is unheard of for a school like Coppin State.”
For years, Coppin State wasn’t considered a basketball powerhouse, but this season, they’ve made sure opponents respect their game. “Usually when teams think of Coppin, they expect an easy win. Now, when they play us, they have to come in with a full scout,” said forward Laila Lawrence to WMAR News.
The Eagles take on Colgate this Saturday at 5:00 PM in the WNIT tournament opener. With momentum on their side, Coppin State is ready to keep making history.
