Social Security Administration Closes Two Maryland Offices Amid Government Cuts

Big changes are happening at the Social Security Administration (SSA), headquartered in Woodlawn, Maryland. This week, the agency closed two of its offices, putting employees on administrative leave as part of a broader effort to streamline the federal government.
On Monday, Feb. 24, the SSA shut down its Office of Transformation, followed by the closure of the Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity on Tuesday. According to Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek, these moves align with President Trump’s push to cut government spending and make operations more “efficient.”
After taking office in January, Trump signed an executive order creating the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to reduce federal spending. Leading the charge? None other than Elon Musk, who has been vocal about slashing entire agencies in the name of budget cuts.
“President Trump has mandated the federal government eliminate wasteful and inefficient offices, and the Office of Transformation was a prime example,” Dudek said. “This redundant office was created under the previous administration, and we are righting that wrong.”
With the shutdown of the civil rights and equal opportunity office, responsibilities like handling equal employment opportunity complaints and accommodation requests will be transferred to other SSA departments.
The Baltimore Banner reports that about 200 employees were either let go or placed on leave due to the closures. However, it’s still unclear how many of those positions were based in Woodlawn.
As the government restructuring continues, more changes could be on the horizon—stay tuned.
