Reggina Jefferies, 16, was one of many attending a Tuesday repass in downtown Oakland, California, for two boys who drowned in a local reservoir, when she lost her life to gun violence, according to KTVU.
Directly after the ceremony, shots rang out around 5:41 p.m., with one fatally striking Reggina. Police say a total of four people were shot; Reggina was the only casualty.
Just hours before, Reggina was a praise dancer at the funeral ceremony honoring the memory of friends Josiah Pratt and Jamari Wilson, two 15-year-olds who drowned in nearby Modesto.
Her mother, Onika Wilson, dropped her off at the vigil, not knowing that would be their last time together.
“I called my daughter at 5:25 and asked her if she was okay, and she said, ‘Yes.’ I got a phone call that my daughter had been shot at 5:36,” Onika said.
In a tearful interview with KTVU, the teen’s mother said her daughter was “her angel,” and pleaded for justice.
Police currently have no leads in the case. Witnesses said an offsite altercation spilled into the vigil, but law enforcement has not confirmed this speculation.
The community started a memorial at the location where Reggina was killed.
KTVU reports that rappers Da Brat and Bow Wow are scheduled to perform in Oakland on Friday at the Baystarz Kick Back and will donate proceeds to Reggina’s funeral.
