Many rape victims fear they will be sexually assaulted again, and Roar for Good is trying to lessen that fear anyway it can.

Meet Athena. It’s a pocket-sized device that can be clipped to a shirt, belt, or worn around the neck. When activated, an alarm will sound, and the device will send an alert to the wearer’s emergency contacts, notifying them of the victim’s location. The product is currently in the crowdsourcing phase with a campaign on Indiegogo. Roar for Good, a company that makes “fashionable safety jewelry for women,” has already exceeded its goal of $40,000, raising over $160,000.

From Indiegogo:

“Women should not need to alter their lifestyle, modify their behavior, or carry self-defense devices to protect themselves. Our goal is to help create a society where that is a reality. In the meantime, we are committed to helping make a difference.”

The company boasts about Athena’s ease of use, along with its stylish look. A portion of the proceeds for the device will also be “invested in educational programs that have been shown to increase empathy and decrease violence.” There’s no way to totally protect yourself from a sexual attack, but empathy training certainly sounds like a step in the right direction.

The Athena will retail for $99 and will be available in May 2016.
