Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and city council members are under much pressure to revise the proposed police and firefighter pension cuts before their June 3o deadline. The latest proposal, cuts overall benefits and increases the years of service required to retire. The council is also looking into changing the cost of living raises and almost double the contribution rate, to 10% from six percent.

The police and fire unions are furious and state that it is illegal for the city to make such drastic changes that will negatively affect the livelihood of police and firefighters.

“Failure to address the pension crisis would be absolutely catastrophic,” said Mayor Rawlings-Blake.
