The Baltimore Ravens’ competition at center has taken a major turn after Danny Pinter suffered an injury during Wednesday’s joint practice with the Minnesota Vikings.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that Pinter suffered a torn patellar tendon and is expected to miss significant time.

Head Coach Jesse Minter did not confirm the specific injury Thursday but acknowledged Pinter could be sidelined for an extended period.

“Not going to speak on details of it right now, but probably will miss an extended amount of time,” Minter said. “He’s still getting some different opinions and things like that.”

Pinter’s injury leaves Ethan Pocic and Jovaughn Gwyn as the primary candidates for Baltimore’s starting center job. The Ravens are looking to replace departed Pro Bowler Tyler Linderbaum at one of the team’s few unsettled starting positions.

Gwyn helped his case with a strong performance in Baltimore’s preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, earning the second-highest Pro Football Focus grade among Ravens offensive players.

Pocic is continuing his return from an Achilles injury suffered Dec. 7, with Baltimore planning to increase his workload during joint practices.

Minter praised both players for handling Minnesota’s aggressive defensive looks and blitz packages.

“I think Jo’s done a really nice job,” Minter said, adding that both centers performed well against the Vikings defense.

The competition will continue over the final weeks of preseason. Corey Bullock will also receive snaps at center during Saturday’s preseason game in Minnesota after returning to practice Aug. 5 from the Non-Football Illness list.
