A body was discovered inside a submerged van that was pulled from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor late Thursday morning, according to city police.

The Baltimore Police Underwater Recovery Team and the Baltimore City Fire Department responded around 9:30 a.m. to reports of a vehicle possibly underwater near 501 E. Pratt Street—just behind the National Aquarium’s Pier IV annex.

Several hours later, divers located the vehicle about 22 feet below the surface. Police divers attached a tow line to the van, and a large tow truck hoisted the mud-covered Honda minivan—its windows damaged—onto land.

The area was quickly cordoned off with police tape once authorities discovered human remains inside the vehicle. The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the person’s identity and the official cause and manner of death.

The minivan bore markings from Silver Taxi Cab Service of Waldorf, including the company’s logo and vehicle number. Attempts to reach the taxi service for comment were unsuccessful.

As temperatures climbed into the 90s, a crowd of onlookers gathered along the waterfront, observing the activity of nearly a dozen divers, officers, and firefighters. Authorities remained on the scene for about two hours before towing the vehicle away.

One bystander stayed the entire time, documenting the event with photos and video.
