Video Shows Fatal Police Shooting of Bilal “BJ” Abdullah

The Baltimore Police Department on Monday released body camera footage of the fatal shooting of Bilal “BJ” Abdullah, a well-known arabber in the city, showing a tense confrontation with police that ended in his death.
The footage appears to show the 36-year-old withdrawing a firearm and firing at pursuing officers, striking one in the foot. Moments later, Abdullah seems to drop the weapon, then retrieve it and raise it again in the direction of the police. Officers then fired multiple rounds, fatally wounding him.
Police Commissioner Richard Worley called the incident “tragic,” but stated that the officers followed protocol. He said the video confirms that Abdullah fired first, and that the officers’ weapons remained holstered until that point.
In the aftermath, bodycam footage captured chaotic scenes as bystanders screamed in anguish and physically confronted police officers. The department said the crowd’s reaction delayed medical assistance for Abdullah.
Jamal Turner, head of the city’s independent Police Accountability Board, expressed concern over the high number of shots fired, more than 20, and called for further review of the officers’ response.
The Maryland Attorney General’s Office, which investigates police-involved shootings, said the June 17 exchange in the Upton neighborhood involved three officers: Devin Yancy, Omar Rodriguez, and Ashley Negron, all of whom are now on routine administrative leave.
Abdullah’s death has sparked protests and renewed public frustration over police conduct. Hundreds gathered Friday near the site of the shooting to demand answers and accountability.
“He didn’t deserve this,” said Najla Abdullah, Bilal’s sister. “We’re supposed to be able to trust the police, not fear them.”
