As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Maryland State Police are urging drivers to make safety a priority, reminding everyone: “Safety starts with you.”

To help ensure safe travels during the busy holiday weekend, state troopers across Maryland are increasing patrols with a focus on preventing impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving. All 23 Maryland State Police barracks, along with the specialized SPIDRE Team (State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort), will launch DUI saturation patrols and high-visibility enforcement across the state. These efforts are supported by the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office.

Throughout the weekend, troopers will work to keep traffic moving efficiently, quickly respond to highway incidents, and to crack down on violations that endanger motorists.

Below is where you’ll see increased patrols:

Eastern Region
Troopers from the Berlin, Centreville, Easton, Princess Anne, and Salisbury barracks will focus on U.S. Routes 301, 13, 50, Maryland Routes 404 and 413, and surrounding counties.

Central Region
The College Park, Forestville, Golden Ring, Rockville, Waterloo, and Westminster barracks will patrol heavily along Interstates 495 and 95, Maryland Routes 185, 97, and 124, and U.S. Routes 29 and 193.

Western Region
Increased enforcement will occur in areas with high rates of impaired driving crashes. Troopers from the Cumberland, Frederick, Hagerstown, and McHenry barracks will patrol Interstates 81 and 70, and U.S. Route 40. Hagerstown will also carry out a Move Over Initiative on Memorial Day.

Northern Region
Troopers from Bel Air, the JFK Memorial Highway, and North East barracks will patrol known trouble spots along U.S. Route 40 and within their counties.

Southern Region
The Annapolis, Glen Burnie, La Plata, Leonardtown, and Prince Frederick barracks will concentrate efforts on U.S. Route 50, Maryland Routes 5, 235, 4, and Interstates 295, 97, and 695.

Authorities stress that many tragic incidents can be prevented. If you’re planning to drink, consider using a rideshare service, calling a taxi, designating a sober driver, or taking public transportation.

With increased patrols and public cooperation, officials hope to make this Memorial Day weekend as safe as possible for everyone on the road.
