Implemented two years ago, Obamacare has changed the face of healthcare coverage across the country. Millions of people are getting their coverage through Medicaid, Child Health Plus, or private plans under the Affordable Care Act, and the amount of people is expected to surge when the third open enrollment period kicks off. “Affordability is a big issue in terms of how people make decisions, and we’ll be focused on that,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell. Open enrollment ends on December 15th. The Obama administration is striving to have 10 million people with paid coverage on both state and federal exchanges by the end of next year. Read more.


The Episcopal Church Elects First Black Leader

The Episcopal Church has taken a major step towards diversifying their leadership by inducting their first African-American national leader. Bishop Michael Curry will serve as the church’s first Black bishop at the Episcopal General Convention in Salt Lake City. Curry was at the helm of the Diocese of North Carolina for almost 15 years. He will take on the position that was previously held by Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who broke barriers as the first female leader of the congregation. Bishop Curry’s induction comes at a time when race has been pushed to the forefront of a national conversation. The induction ceremony will take place at the Washington National Cathedral. Grand Jury Recommends Clearing Cop Who Shot Black Man

A grand jury recommended clearing an Atlanta cop of charges after he fatally shot an African-American man who was trying to seek help. Forty-four-year-old Kevin Davis called 911 after his girlfriend was stabbed. DeKalb Officer Joseph Pitts arrived and killed Davis’ dog. When Davis heard the gunshots, he grabbed his firearm and went to see where the shots were coming from. After a brief argument, Officer Pitts shot and killed Davis. District Attorney Robert James will take the jury’s recommendation into consideration, but has not released a statement about what’s on the horizon. Read more.
