Freddie Gray Baltimore Protests

In what must be filed under “you can’t be serious,” the Baltimore police is investigating a sign found inside the rear door of a police van with the words, “Enjoy your ride, cuz we sure will!,” reports NBC News.

In case you missed it, this sign is particularly galling because of the case of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old who died after suffering severe injuries in the back of a police van in Baltimore. No one is able to confirm how long the sign had been in the back of the van.

Gray allegedly endured what is called a “rough ride,” where a prisoner is subjected to erratic driving in the back of a police vehicle. “Rough rides” are supposedly given as payback from the arresting officers, either because the suspect was running or some other real or imagined slight or infraction.

Gray died in April, and autopsy reports show his spinal cord was severed in the back of a police transport. Although Gray’s hands and feet were shackled, he was not belted in — a violation of Baltimore police policy. Gray’s death was ruled a homicide and set off protests and riots in Baltimore, yet another high profile case of an unarmed black man killed by police.

“The nature and the posting of wording in one of our transport vehicles is both concerning and unacceptable,” the Baltimore Police Department said in a statement, according to local TV station, WBAL.

Baltimore District Attorney Marilyn Mosby charged six Baltimore police officers in Gray’s death, and The Baltimore Sun reports that Gray’s fatal injury was most likely caused by a “high energy” impact, caused by highly variable speeds by the driver of the police vehicle.
