Althea Gibson, tennis legend,became the first Black to win a major U.S. National Championship when she defeated Louise Brough in the women’s singles final at Forest Hills on this date in 1957.

Althea Gibson served from 1973 on in various national and New Jersey positions in tennis and recreation. Among her honors:

  • 1971 – National Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame
  • 1971 – International Tennis Hall of Fame
  • 1974 – Black Athletes Hall of Fame
  • 1983 – South Carolina Hall of Fame
  • 1984 – Florida Sports Hall of Fame
