WARREN, Mich. — Fitzgerald Public Schools are now enrolling children who are eligible to begin kindergarten this fall. The district offers full-day kindergarten at both Westview Elementary School and Mound Park Elementary School.

Students who are 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2016 are eligible to start kindergarten in fall 2016. Families with a child who turns 5 after that date but before Dec. 1, 2016 may enroll their child in kindergarten after speaking with the principal of the school.

“Kindergarten is one of the most critical years in a child’s development, and families who enroll in our district are setting up their students for success,” said Barbara VanSweden, superintendent of Fitzgerald Public Schools and a former kindergarten teacher. “We’re thrilled to welcome families who are taking this exciting next step in their child’s education.”

Kindergarten classroom visits and school tours will take place March 30 at 9 a.m. at Westview, located at 24077 Warner Ave., and at 1 p.m. at Mound Park, located at 5356 Toepfer Rd.

The kindergarten curriculum actively engages children in age-appropriate, hands-on learning experiences that build on the strengths, interests and needs of the individual child. It provides experiences that will help each child’s academic, social and emotional development. Each child will learn responsibility and develop decision-making skills to help them become self-reliant and independent.

School Age Childcare, a before- and after-school care program, is available for district elementary school students. Free and reduced-cost lunches are also available to eligible students.

Registration applications may be picked up at either school or filled out online at http://fitz.k12.mi.us/register. Families with questions may call the main offices at Westview at (586) 757-5520 or Mound Park at (586) 757-7590.

Families who live outside the district or who live within the district but wish to attend the other elementary school can enroll through Schools of Choice by contacting either elementary school’s main office.
