It’s rare for young rappers these days to speak on anything that isn’t about turning up at the club, getting girls, or doing drugs. Vince Staples is clearly a different breed.
The 22-year-old emcee spoke to CNN about the drug-addiction epidemic, which he said is “rampant” in rap music, and the importance of education.
“No matter what color the child that’s dropping out is, no matter what the background of the child is, it hurts everybody,” he said. “I always wanted to go to high school then go to college to experience sports and the environment, but it became harder and harder.”
The Long Beach native believes that school suspensions, which “start as early as kindergarten,” make it more likely for kids to drop out at a young age and have run-ins with the police. He added, “The first time I’d ever been in handcuffs in my whole life was on a school campus.”
