He has a steady hand and nerves of steel Nicholas Irving is one of the deadliest snipers in the history of the U.S. armed forces. Irving amassed 33 killings in 120 days, and now the former Army Ranger has written an eloquent and moving account of his experiences in the war zone titled, “The Reaper: Autobiography of One of the Deadliest Special Ops Snipers.”

Irving joined Roland Martin, host of “NewsOne Now” on Monday to discuss his book and experiences in combat.

When asked if becoming a sniper was something that he always wanted to do, Irving told Martin he wanted to become a sniper since he was in sixth grade.

Irving explained that every summer his family would vacation in the South and he would go shooting with his father, who trained him.

“I would pick up a rifle every now and again and take it out and see how far I could stretch it out and how far I could shoot,” says Irving. “It just became one of those things that I really became good at.”

Deployed to Afghanistan at the age of 18, Irving said he saw a number of his fellow soldiers get hit. “Being up on a roof top my entire job as to make sure my guys would not get hit.”

“Everytime one of my guys got hit, which was rare, I took it really personal, so whatever I could do to make that not happen again, I would do that—which meant putting bullets in the enemy.”
