Philadelphia, Pennsylvania– Former Mayor John F. Street’s actions while serving as the chairman for the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) are being investigated by Federal authorities.

Officials say that Street approved contracts to a law firm that his son worked for, accruing the firm millions of dollars.

Auditors reviewed 472 PHA invoices for $4.5 million in legal bills – but could substantiate payments only for $11,800 in billings.   The audit also found that a total of $30.5 million was paid during a three-year period to 15 legal firms.

“Chairman Street’s approval of contracts to the law firm that employed his son is an exceptionally distasteful conflict of interest. Our investigation on this issue continues,” said General Michael P. Stephens, HUD Inspector said in a written statement in response to an audit released Thursday.
