New Orleans –At its membership meeting January 12, 2011, the New Orleans Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) adopted a resolution demanding that the mayor and city council of the City of New Orleans immediately request the municipalities surrounding the City of New Orleans to enter into a memorandum of understanding whereby said municipalities would allow the citizens of New Orleans free access to said municipalities during times of natural or man-made disasters.
The New Orleans Branch of the NAACP adopted its resolution several weeks after U.S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon decided to dismiss the remainder of the federal lawsuits filed after the Gretna police and Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputies closed the Crescent City Connection between New Orleans and the West Bank immediately after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 to prevent New Orleans residents fleeing the flooded East Bank to cross the river in search of assistance.
One of the lawsuits in the case was reportedly settled for a measly $10,000.
