Washington — Rep. Charles Rangel took his punishment without a whimper Thursday after he was censured by his congressional colleagues for violating a slew of House ethics rules.

For 30 seconds, Rangel stood in the well of Congress with his hands clasped in front of him and listened silently as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi grimly gave him a formal, public tongue-lashing.

It was the worst humiliation of his long congressional career.

“I just would want all of you to know that in my heart I truly feel good,” Rangel told his colleagues. “I know in my heart I’m going to be judged not by this Congress but by my life and activities.”

Before leaving, Rangel added, “I just apologize for the awkward position that some of you are in.”
