Frédérique Morrel and Aaron Levin: Fall/Fail
This artistic adventure is designed to explore the realms of humanity’s origins: Adam and Eve, the animals of the garden of Eden, and paradise lost using as raw material the disregarded, discarded, disliked popular tapestries that occupied generations of women in the long evening hours but ended up as rejects in the further corners of yard sales and thrift shops. Their creations have been re-made using vintage material discovered by themselves as well as friends.
Fri Oct 7 Opening Reception 5pm – 7pm, Exhibition continues through Nov 9
Brown Center: Rosenberg Gallery, 1301 W. Mount Royal Avenue

Regina DeLuise: Photographs from the Field
The photographic opportunities provided to Regina DeLuise through grants, teaching, and studying abroad in India, Nepal, Italy, and Bhutan are presented in this exhibition as a curiously continuous thread. The Italian light in its luscious saturation, the intoxicating scent of incense burning in a temple, finding herself alone on a Himalayan plateau—each of these experiences cleared her vision and opened her eyes. In their making, printing, and exhibition, these pictures taken with her 8 x 10 camera are a meditation on circumstances and connections she encountered along the way. The absence of distractions and voices both far away and familiar, are her muse. The pictures are an intimate understanding of the world and her place in it.
Fri Oct 21 5pm – 7pm Opening Reception, Exhibition continues through Nov 13
Bunting Center: Pinkard Gallery, 1401 W. Mount Royal Avenue

Television personality and author Tavis Smiley recently sat down with TheGrio to talk about his upcoming PBS special “Too Important to Fail,” which examines the Black student education gap, and to address his criticsim of President Barack Obama.

During the interview, Smiley is unapologetic about his criticism of Obama saying, “My job has always been to hold presidents accountable to the best interest of all Americans but specifically and unapologetically for [African-Americans].”

“It’s just funny to me that people get more riled up and more excited and more angry about what I may or may not say about the president than they do about the crisis in black boys. If Negroes could get half as mad at what black boys are enduring as they do when Cornel West or Tavis Smiley says something, we might get something done.”

James C. Anderson, the man killed in the hate crime in which a group of white teens allegedly yelled “Kill that Ni**er,” was also a gay man.
District of Columbia officials joined the Washington D.C. Chamber of Commerce and metro area business leaders to announce the creation of a voluntary hiring initiative to facilitate the employment of city residents by area employers.

The “One City-One Hire,” initiative is designed to provide wage subsidies, tax-incentives, and job training by the city government to businesses in the D.C. area who add a D.C. resident to their personnel rosters.

“While this is not a panacea, hopefully this will begin to connect the dots for lots of people,” said Mayor Vincent Gray (D), at a press conference announcing the plan.

According to the District’s Department of Employment Services, the hiring initiative was patterned after a similar one in Atlanta, Georgia. The Mayor’s office reports that almost 13,000 Atlanta residents were hired during the first six months of the program’s inception there. The goal of ‘One City-One Hire” is to employ 10,000 D.C. residents in one year.

Earlier reports alleged Murphy was a victim of mistaken identity, but police now believe her and her brother were targeted as retaliation for an earlier assault between individuals at rival housing projects.

The New York Daily News Reports:

Murphy, 18, one of the top female high-school hoops players in the country, was blasted with a 9-mm. gun as she pleaded for her life on the fourth floor of the Harlem project.

Police were interviewing two witnesses to the bloodshed, which apparently stemmed from a war between the Grant Houses and the Manhattanville Houses.
