After countless weeks of speculation, Newark Mayor Cory Booker today quelled rumors of a possible U.S. Senate run in 2012.
The Newark Star-Ledger reported earlier this week that sources close to Booker’s camp were thinking of running against U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez next year.
A Booker fundraiser, Bari Mattes, formed a federal political action committee this Monday called “CoryPAC,” according to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission.
Despite his insistence that he will serve out his full mayorship, Booker did not rule out a run in 2014 when the current term of Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., who will be 90 that year, comes to a close.
“You know, that’s 2014, I support Senator Lautenberg. I talked to him last night. He is my senator. I’ve supported him before. I’ve raised money for him. We’ve worked hard for him,” Booker said. “But that’s three years from now. Right now I’ve got to focus on making Newark safer, safer, safer, jobs and education.”
